QUESTIONS FOR
HÅVARD BUSTNES
What were you trying to accomplish in documenting the inner life of Golden Dawn? In recent years, the Nordic Resistant Movement has been alarming authorities in Norway due to the followers that they're attracting. Why did you choose to venture away from your own home to find and document neo-Nazis elsewhere?
At various points in Golden Dawn Girls, individuals like Panagiotis’s mother Dafni acknowledge that the camera’s gaze is on them. Did you notice that any of the individuals were doing things that they might not have otherwise done if the camera had been elsewhere? What’s also notable is that different points, we also see you in the film and they comment on who you are and what you’re motivations are. Do you think this produced a truly authentic depiction or that they were becoming people they weren’t because the camera was in the room?
Do you believe that far-right politics, in today’s climate, realistically runs the risk of repeating the horrors and atrocities committed in the twentieth century? Or do you believe that many who have been frustrated with the political process and in search of a “punk,” or roguish symbol, are merely using the Nazis and the fascists from the 1930s to fill that void? If the stability of the “norm” has disappointed you at every turn, perhaps they think that turning to what’s been traditionally bad or negative is something to be praised. Not ridiculed, mocked, or avoided.
